In a statement, FOTA expressed its wish to see the Brackley-based outfit sold intact, following Honda's announcement that it will quit grand prix racing with immediate effect.
The statement, issued a day after FOTA met in London on Thursday, read: "The chairman of FOTA, Luca di Montezemolo, has been informed by the top management of the Honda Racing F1 team of the decision to retire from the FIA Formula One Championship in 2009.
"FOTA wishes that the technologically advanced expertise of the team based in Brackley is not dispersed and that the sporting challenge is resumed soon."
Chairman Luca di Montezemolo, interpreting the feeling of all FOTA members, expressed his greatest appreciation for the 'professional and human qualities' of Ross Brawn, Honda Team Principal, and Nick Fry, Honda Racing F1 team CEO.
The Japanese manufacturers' decision followed yesterday's FOTA meeting in London, where the teams unanimously agreed a new package of drastic cost cuts in a bid to head off the threat of a standard engine being introduced.
Honda Racing F1 senior personnel are currently working on a deal to sell the Brackley-based operation and remain hopeful that it be on the grid next season.
